Five beauty resolutions for the New Year

A new year and a new decade offer the ideal opportunity for a renewed focus on your health, wellbeing and self-confidence.

If the dawn of 2020 sees you planning an overhaul of your approach to each, here are our top five beauty resolutions to consider in the New Year.

Hit pause for inner wellbeing

In the words of the eternally beautiful actress Sophia Loren: “Beauty is how you feel inside and it reflects in your eyes”.

The turning of the new year page offers the ideal opportunity to really focus on your inner wellbeing by hitting pause occasionally to take a quiet moment for yourself.

We all know the technologically driven modern world can be overwhelming, with the temptation to work around the clock and be switched on 24/7.

Some of the best techniques available to address this endless noise include mindfulness and meditation.

Although different, both mindfulness and meditation allow you to calm the mind and enjoy quiet reflection far removed from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Mindfulness sees you focus calmly on one thing while meditation involves clearing your mind of everything, but both have benefits which extend from reduced stress to increased energy, better focus and less likelihood of depression.

If attending meditation or mindfulness classes seems like a bit of a stretch, there are a host of great apps available to get you started with some relaxation techniques.

Embrace exercise

Exercise not only releases endorphins that make you feel great, it also has major benefits for the health of your skin and increases your energy level.

Exercise needn’t be overly strenuous either. Gentle exercise like walking or swimming allows you to unwind at the same time as upping the heart rate, while yoga and Pilates can help build core strength, muscle tone and fitness.

In fact, the ancient Indian practise of yoga is considered a comprehensive combination of meditation, breathing and body strengthening, and has been linked to all sorts of health benefits, while Pilates is great for achieving that long, lean look while also building muscle tone.

If you are considering exercise as part of your regular routine, remember to remove your makeup in advance, and give your skin a gentle cleanse afterwards to clean perspiration, grit and grime from your pores.

Get skin care advice from a professional

As you focus on the new you for 2020, now’s the perfect time to seek professional skincare advice on the products and routine that will best work for you as an individual.

Most of us have skin concerns which we are looking to address, and your skin is as unique as the human being within it.

Professional advice about the best products and regimes is an investment in the short and long-term health and appearance of your skin.

Meanwhile there is a wide range of clinical treatments available to assist with common concerns like fine lines and wrinkles, hyper pigmentation, acne and rosacea.

Even if you don’t have a specific issue to address, treatments and advice can set you on the right path for the year ahead when it comes to improved confidence, better wellbeing and by simply taking a moment for yourself.

Improve your nutrition and diet

As the saying goes, you are what you eat, and few places is this more apparent than in the general look and feel of your skin.

As the biggest organ in the body, the skin is often the first indicator of your inner health and wellbeing, which makes a good diet a must when it comes to improving its appearance.

Foods to eat for general health and overall skin appearance include:

Fatty fish like mackerel, salmon and herring

Fatty fish are packed full of Omega-3, which is renowned for reducing skin inflammation and the appearance of redness.

In addition, Omega-3 can make your skin less sensitive to the sun’s harmful rays, while fatty fish are also rich in Vitamin E which is an important antioxidant.

Like fatty fish, avocados are rich in good fats and also Vitamin E. The upshot is they are linked to skin suppleness. Meanwhile they also contain Vitamin C, which assists in the production of collagen and also helps protect your skin from the effects of aging.

Seeds and nuts

Seeds like sunflowers and nuts like walnuts are packed full of essential nutrients that your skin will simply love. In the case of sunflower seeds, they’re rich in Vitamin E, while walnuts contain Omega-3, Vitamins E and C, selenium, protein, and Zinc.

Sweet potatoes, capsicum, tomatoes

These little gems are a great addition to your diet for a whole host of reasons. All contain beta-carotenes which your body converts to Vitamin A. Beta-carotene also assists with providing skin a level of built-in protection against harmful UV radiation. This does not remove the need for topically applied broad spectrum sun protection but rather offers skin added protection.

Meanwhile both capsicum and tomatoes are rich in Vitamin C which helps with the production of collagen to keep your skin looking firm and supple.

These are just some of the foods inked to good skin health, and proof of the role diet plays in appearance. The bottom line is fresh fruit and vegies are a must, while sufficient consumption of water is a non-negotiable.

Trash the toxicity

Whether it’s stress, negative people, a job you dislike, or the belief your world doesn’t live up to what you see on social media, now’s a great time to re-evaluate the toxic people and activities in your life.

The start of 2020 could be a great opportunity to set boundaries around your social media use and screen time, or simply say no a little more often to all those endless requests of your time.

It could also be the time to distance yourself from people who give less than they take and leave you feeling depleted of energy.

Together all these factors affect your wellbeing, with the impacts extending to your mental and physical health.
